“Instead of wondering when your next vacation is, maybe you should set up a life you don’t need to escape from.”
― Seth Godin
I meet people every day who are suffering from stress-related disorders connected to their work. Most of them hold down a job to support a lifestyle they are living or desire to live. Usually, the stress comes from the contrast between where the person is or perceives themselves to be and where they feel they would like to be. The key to relieving the stress and shifting from good to remarkable is all about the mindset. Things can be hard if we want them to be. Things can just as easily be smooth, effortless, and delightful! How you really want it to go, it will! What you focus on, you feed. Do you want your life to be good? Or remarkable?
You Are Remarkable
That said, it is important to know what is remarkable. Remarkable is a product, service, company, or person people want to remark about. It is something people want to talk about. They want to tell their friends, coworkers, and anyone else they come in contact with about the thing that is remarkable!
Now it’s time to ask yourself, what do I do that is remarkable? If you can’t think of anything, here is a way to reframe this broad question: what comes naturally to you that you are passionate about, that you love to do more than anything in the world, that you are good at, and benefits yourself and others? Everybody’s got something unique and amazing about themselves. It’s why you’re here on this planet!
Take Action
Business mentor Seth Godin calls this “making art.” He said in a recent interview:
Art is the work of a human being – something a person does with generosity to touch someone else to make a change for the better. We can see art in the way the nurse in a doctor’s office treats us when she knows how much pain we’re in. She’s not just doing her job; she’s being a person. She is enlarging the bubble around herself to include us. Our best work is always about standing out, never about standing in.
Do this thing you love to do and you will move from being good to being remarkable! When you do this, you will never have a JOB again: you will have a purpose. Do this, and you will be happy!
So, what is your art? What is your passion? If you could do anything in the world, what would it be? When you answer this question, write down three action steps to make it happen! Then, in the words of Phil Knight from Nike, “Just Do It!”
